The Doula Book - Review

The Doula Book: How a Trained Labor Companion Can Help You Have a Shorter, Easier and Healthier Birth is the virtual bible for doula training. This book is truly written by experts, two doctors and psyco-therapist: Marshall H Klaus, MD; John H Kennell, MD; and Phyllis H Klaus, CSW, MFT. With that alphabet soup is it any wonder that this book is the premier in its field?

What is surprising is how very readable this book is. Whether you are a doula or a client, this book offers clear and concise information on the valuable role that a doula can provide a family during pregnancy, birth and the post-partum period. This book does an especially amazing job of translating some very complex scientific studies on the value of doulas into a format that the lay person can understand and appreciate the impact.

My only complaint with this text is that it offers no argument for the value of a doula in the cesarean birth. In fact, its only mention of cesarean birth is to highlight how a doula can reduce your chances of requiring a surgical birth. As a doula serving high-risk, cesarean and VBAC families, I feel that the subject warrants at least its own chapter in such a well-known reference.

Despite the lack of information specific to my cesarean clients, this is still a book which I recommend to my clients. Because of its place as the premier text upon the role and value of a doula, it is a must read for anyone who might be interested in the subject. Even the out-dated pictures do not distract form the value of this important text.
